Find Your Feet: In Honor of Ruby Sutton, a Dubuque Legend

Speaker: LaMetra Murdock

Through Ruby’s story, participants will discover the power of resilience, courage, and community leadership. This conversation will highlight not only the impact Ruby had on generations of families, but also how her journey exemplifies the importance of self-advocacy—understanding your “why” and moving your feet toward meaningful change.

About LaMetra:

Born and raised on the southside of Chicago, LaMetra learned firsthand about how “poverty” helps build “community”. She grew up where something as simple as borrowing a cup of sugar from your neighbor was normal. Growing up with social norms such as this is what helped shape LaMetra’s understanding of how “community” helps others in need no matter how big or small. Her understanding of community is realizing that “we are one”. LaMetra was born the youngest of 3 siblings that were raised in a 2 (two) parent household. LaMetra is from a strong family that has taught her the importance of family and community. She is a dedicated advocate for underrepresented, underserved, and impoverished populations. She actively champions efforts to dismantle systemic barriers and obstacles that hinder community members' access to resources and opportunities. Recognizing the realities of generational poverty, food insecurity, and child deprivation, LaMetra understands that these issues predominantly impact BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) communities. She states, “Poverty reduction and community development are at the heart of my purpose. I also strive to instill these values in my three daughters and granddaughter, which I refer to as planting seeds for the future of our communities.”

All are welcome. All are worthy. All belong.
